Drugs: When a Business Model Learns Your Biology
Legal does not mean harmless. Illegal does not explain pharmacology. Risk starts with substance, dose, purity, dependence potential and context
Evidence: WHO public-health evidence + harm-reduction framing
What is worth carrying forward
- Substances differ radically in mechanism, dose, purity, legal status and dependence risk.
- Alcohol is legal in many places but WHO describes ethanol as psychoactive, toxic and dependence-producing.
- Effective policy has to combine prevention, treatment, enforcement against exploitation and honest risk education.
The Label Is Not the Pharmacology
Some psychoactive substances are medicines. Some are legal consumer products. Some are illegal. Some can relieve pain at one dose and cause fatal poisoning at another. That is why 'drugs are bad' is too weak to be useful, while 'natural is safe' is just as unreliable.
Profit Can Meet Vulnerability
Whenever a product can repeatedly activate reward, reduce pain or change consciousness, profit incentives can collide with human vulnerability. That applies differently across alcohol, opioids, stimulants, nicotine and novel synthetic drugs. The investigation has to identify the substance, market, purity, marketing, supply chain and treatment environment.
Ask About the Pain
Some of the most important prevention questions are social: Why does the person want to escape consciousness? What trauma, isolation, unemployment, pain or environment is present? Chemistry matters, but a civilization that treats only the molecule can miss the reason demand exists.
Give this story the questions it deserves
GH-KU-0016external-supportedSubstance risk literacy
Legal status is not a pharmacological risk metric. Substance assessment should distinguish drug, dose, purity, route, dependence potential, interactions, supply conditions and social drivers of harmful use.
